Frameworks

The words we use, defined precisely enough to be argued with.

These are the models that structure our research and our products. We publish the definitions openly because a framework that cannot be examined is not a framework — it is a slogan.

The canonical chain

Conditions → Access → Participation → Human Function → Observable Outcomes → Flourishing

Each term follows from the one before it. The chain is the argument: change the conditions and you change what becomes available; change what is available and you change what a person can do.

01Conditions

What surrounds a person — the environment they are responding to.

Everything a person is surrounded by and responding to — physical, social, economic, relational. Conditions are not background; they are the active input. Much of what appears to be a fixed trait turns out to be a durable response to durable conditions.

02Access

What actually becomes available to them within those conditions.

What actually becomes available to a person within their conditions. Access is distinct from availability: a resource that formally exists but cannot be reached, afforded, understood, or safely used is not accessible. Access is the hinge of the model — where conditions become consequences.

03Participation

How much of their own life they are actually able to take part in.

What a person actually takes part in within their access — thinking, creating, resting, learning, contributing, grieving, recovering, belonging. It comes before Human Function in the chain because it is the living of the life rather than the record of it: how well that participation functions is the next question. Productivity is one expression of participation and never its definition — a person can produce constantly while becoming increasingly absent from their own life.

04Human Function

How well a person can do what matters to them.

How well a person can do what matters to them — think, rest, connect, decide, recover, act. Function is observed and described, never scored against a norm.

05Observable Outcomes

What follows, over time, from functioning well or poorly.

What follows over time from functioning well or poorly. Outcomes accumulate; they are the visible residue of sustained access, or of sustained interference with it.

06Flourishing

What becomes possible when the system supports the human.

A life with room in it. The condition where a person has enough access, for long enough, that function is no longer the limiting factor on their life.

The Knowledge Library

The definitions above are the compressed version. The Knowledge Library is where each one is taken apart properly — one question per article, in plain language, with the reasoning shown rather than summarised.

It is published openly and needs no account to read. We are working through the terms in order of how often they are misunderstood, which is why the first articles concern access.

  • Foundations

What If the Problem Isn’t You?

The capstone of the foundational volume. Why 'What is wrong with me?' assumes its own answer before any investigation begins, and what changes when you ask what you are responding to instead.

  • Condition Design

The Conditions That Shape Human Function

Human function is not a fixed expression of personality. It is the ongoing expression of what becomes available under particular conditions — and a synthesis of the six that most reliably shape it.

  • Flourishing

The Difference Between Coping and Flourishing

Coping is an adaptive response, not a failure. The problem begins when it becomes the permanent architecture of a life — and what becomes available when conditions no longer demand it.

  • Human Function

Why Curiosity Is One of the Most Powerful Human Capacities

Curiosity is treated as a personality trait. It behaves far more like a capacity — the willingness to stay open long enough for a more accurate understanding to emerge, and the thing certainty arrives too early to replace.

  • Human Function

The Goal Was Never Productivity. It Was Participation.

Productivity is one possible expression of healthy human functioning, not its purpose. Why participation is the deeper measure, and what changes when it joins productivity rather than being replaced by it.

  • Permission

    What Is Permission?

Permission is the lived experience of being allowed to participate fully in your own life — not authority granted by someone else, but the absence of unnecessary internal prohibition.
