Have you ever felt like life was happening to you…
…even though you were making choices every day?
You answered the emails.
Paid the bills.
Showed up to work.
Took care of your family.
Crossed things off the list.
From the outside, it looked like you were in control.
But internally, something felt different.
Instead of moving through life, it felt as though life was moving you.
Many people describe this feeling as being “stuck.”
At MoreLife Society, we begin with a different question.
What if the issue is not simply that you’re stuck?
What if your sense of agency has quietly become less available?
We Often Mistake Activity for Agency
Our culture tends to associate agency with independence.
If you’re busy, making decisions, and getting things done, we assume you have agency.
But activity and agency are not the same thing.
A person can spend every hour responding to demands they never chose.
They can meet every expectation while feeling increasingly disconnected from their own participation.
They are acting.
But they may no longer experience themselves as authors of their own lives.
Agency asks a deeper question:
Do I experience myself as someone who can meaningfully participate in shaping what comes next?
The Story We Commonly Tell
When people feel powerless, we often encourage them to “take control.”
Work harder.
Speak up.
Be more confident.
Take responsibility.
Sometimes those responses are appropriate.
But they often assume agency is simply a matter of attitude.
Experience suggests otherwise.
Agency is influenced by conditions.
A person who is constantly interrupted, chronically exhausted, financially unstable, or repeatedly ignored may find it increasingly difficult to experience themselves as someone whose choices matter.
This does not mean agency disappears.
It means access to agency can become restricted.
A Different Way of Understanding Agency
At MoreLife Society, agency is the lived experience of being able to meaningfully participate in your own life.
Agency is not unlimited control.
None of us controls everything.
Agency is the ability to recognize that your choices, attention, voice, relationships, and actions still matter within the reality you inhabit.
Sometimes agency is making a life-changing decision.
Sometimes it is asking a question.
Sometimes it is saying “no.”
Sometimes it is asking for help.
Sometimes it is choosing to rest.
Agency is not measured by the size of the action.
It is measured by the reality of your participation.

Flourishing
When agency is supported, people often gain greater access to:
Initiative.
Hope.
Problem-solving.
Learning.
Creativity.
Decision-making.
Meaningful participation.
When agency becomes restricted, people may begin experiencing life primarily as something to endure rather than something they can help shape.
The issue is not simply what they can do.
It is what feels genuinely available.
Agency Grows Through Participation
Agency is rarely restored all at once.
It often returns through small experiences of meaningful participation.
Choosing instead of merely complying.
Contributing instead of only consuming.
Being heard instead of dismissed.
Noticing that your actions can influence your environment, your relationships, or your own way of responding.
Small experiences accumulate.
Over time, they begin changing how a person understands themselves.
Not as someone who is merely reacting to life.
But as someone who participates in it.
Bring It Into Your Own Experience
Think about a season when you felt deeply engaged with your own life.
What made that possible?
Did someone trust your judgment?
Did you have room to make decisions?
Did you feel heard?
Now think about a season when life felt increasingly automatic.
Where did your participation begin to shrink?
What conditions surrounded that experience?
Observe gently.
Agency is not something to judge.
It is something to notice.
A Small Experiment
This week, notice one moment each day when you make a meaningful choice.
It does not need to be dramatic.
Perhaps you choose:
- how to begin your morning
- whether to ask a question
- how to arrange your workspace
- when to pause
- what conversation to initiate
Afterward, ask yourself:
Did this help me experience myself as a participant in my own life?
Pay attention to what you discover.
A More Complete Understanding
Agency is not the belief that we control everything.
It is the recognition that participation remains possible even when control is limited.
Some conditions genuinely restrict what people can do.
Condition Design takes those realities seriously.
Yet within those realities, agency asks:
“Where does meaningful participation remain possible?”
That question often becomes the beginning of hope.
Agency Within the MoreLife Framework
Agency is one of the six foundational conditions within MoreLife Society, alongside safety, regulation, belonging, reality contact, and permission.
Condition Design asks how homes, workplaces, schools, organizations, and communities can cultivate conditions where people experience themselves not merely as recipients of life, but as participants within it.
Because flourishing is not simply about what happens to us.
It is also about whether we can meaningfully participate in what happens next.
Before You Leave
Notice
When was the last time you genuinely experienced yourself as a participant rather than simply a responder?
Observe
This week, pay attention to moments when your choices — even small ones — help you feel more connected to your own life.
Carry Forward
The next time you feel powerless, pause and ask:
“Where is meaningful participation still available to me?”
Because agency is not measured by controlling everything.
It is measured by remaining able to participate in the life that is unfolding before you.
